The massive and long-limbed baobab is also dubbed the “monkey-bread tree” or “upside-down tree,” so named for the spindly branches, spreading upwards from the thick trunk, that resemble a root system more than a tree’s crown. Since this adaptive tree can store up to 120,000 litres of water inside its hollow trunk during times of draught, it is also used as a source of water.
